The St Joseph
Overland Trail to Oregon and California entered Nemaha County in
Rock Creek township in section 19 and traveled only two miles till
it was in Berwick Township. and then crossed Washington Township
where Bern Kansas is located.

The Railroad followed nearly the same high ground as did the early
trail from the east edge of the county to Bern and from there it
