with second page to open with pointer over photo. My interest in the
trail started when I moved to Clear Creek Township when I was 11
years old. My grandparents lived in Richmond and Clear
creek township and I was always interested in the trails. I explored
the trails and I asked may question about the early days. When I
found the maps of the 1857 at the court house it was like finding a
treasure. There is a lot of history connected with some of our
Townships where the trail and also the Pony Express is
included in the years of 1860 and 61.
When you
place your pointer over the map below you will see some red lines
and explanations of what I explored in the late 30s. I kept the 1938
Aniversities edition of the Courier Tribune and found much
information in the local papers and visiting with Amos Smith
a descendant of Capt John Smith who changed the trail through
Seneca from Richmond. I heard speculation that Capt. John Smith
might have been an undercover agent for the US Government. This
would likely something you were expected to keep quiet about.
Perhaps it was even a safety precaution.
The townships of Clear Creek,
Richmond, and Nemaha were settled early as there was water and trees
which the settlers needed.
It would seem that the trail in its later days did change to go
south into Marion Township and go around Clear Creek and thereby
avoiding one creek to have to cross.
